x marks the spot

via: Lilly Pulitzer

When one of my sorority sisters came to me and asked me if I could paint a canvas for her to add some color and decor to her home, I said sure right off the back. We talked about prices and time lines and I agreed and said, “Just send over some ideas of what you’re thinking!” And then I got this. The above is a fabric (!) print by Lilly Pulitzer called “X Marks The Spot.” It doesn’t appear to be in production any more and that’s the highest quality image I could find of it. I’ve been a little distracted from blogging this week because I’ve been spending all my free time trying to recreate this explosion of color. Note to self: never agree to a price before you see what you’re painting.

off limits

You guys know I love it when things are made from paper, but I actually don’t like when things are made from book paper. It seems… disrespectful almost. I love to read and I love books and I just couldn’t bring myself to cut one up, even a book I disliked. I can’t imagine what the author would think to see their words dissected and transformed into “art”. I don’t mean to belittle the work featured above. It’s a snake necklace by PaperStatement that was featured on the Etsy homepage.  I just feel that this is an interesting jewelry piece that would be just as interesting, if not more, if it was made out of maybe colored paper, and not an unnamed book. Anybody else with me? or am I being too sensitive about the printed word?

Buttermilk & Brioche

Brioche Font - $79.00

Buttermilk Font - $49.00

I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I have never purchased a font. Since the time I decided I wanted to make Graphic Design my career, I have always made do with the font library that came with my macbook and a carefully curated collection of high quality free fonts. However, as a graphic designer, I understand the importance of supporting those artists who painstakingly slave over kerning and swashes and line weight and all the other elements that go into designing a typeface. And in my opinion, no one does that better than Jessica Hische, one of my favorite designers to be jealous of, stalk, admire the work of. She is one of the most talented young designers and her work with lettering is just beautiful. These fonts are gorgeous and I can’t wait to purchase them and incorporate them into some invitation design. What do you think of these fonts? Have you ever purchased a font before? Which one/s and why?

Invitation Only

I went paper shopping today for supplies for the Bachelorette party invitations, which is my favorite part of the process. Stocked up on the red textured paper I use for my gnome hats as well as some paper to re-do an old “Indoor Garden Party” Invitation I worked up for a school project that I would like to revamp. I’m hoping on getting a chance to knock out a prototype before the weekend, and I will post pictures as soon as I can.

There was no specific theme to the party and my sister came at me with an idea of what she wanted already. It’s a typical Bachelorette hurrah. An invitation to a night on the town to celebrate the tying of the knot, with an emphasis on the lingerie shower preceding said hurrah. My sister wanted a card in the shape of a woman’s torso, which opens to contain a pull out card listing the bride-to-be’s bra and panty size.  She had seen a similar design online and wants me to recreate it with my own spin. I always feel weird about designing something when the client (sister) has already picks exactly what they want, and just wants you to recreate it. It’s a little like design plagiarism.  So I’m going to use the opening idea and pull out card concept but try to push the design in a slightly different direction. What do you think? Is it plagiarism to use the concept?
